project goal

“use what you’re learning to learn what you’re using”

Create a tactile educational tool for CDS students and clients who have communication and swallowing disabilities in SJSU community clinics

A collaborative project between Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS) and Industrial Design (ID) department at San Jose State University (SJSU)

what is communication disorders and sciences?

A speech-language pathologist evaluates and diagnoses speech, language, cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders.

where would this be used?

Teaching Aid for EDSP 113 (Anatomy & Physiology of Communication Disorders)

Clinical Resource for the Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders

Playbase therapy is one of the most effective treatments for people with autism. The activity helps develop their functions while informing what needs to be diagnosed.

The design was narrowed down to a 3D puzzle concept where users would learn about each part of the brain and where they belong

the interactive choice

The idea was brought up by CDS students and drives the core aspect of the design.

The choice to use magnets was to have tactile feedback when interacting with it while reducing frustration for people with autism to focus on their development.
